Wound up here

One day, my eldest daughter, (Alana), asked me, “Dad, why do some people drive nice new cars while others drive old beat up ones, and some people don’t even have a car?” It made me realise just how much emphasis we place on material possessions. Some people see material possessions as a measure of success in life, but we all know that’s not the case. Most of us have really put it in, no matter what our cause. However, sometimes life leads us in different directions. This also holds true for Australia as a nation; our history and beliefs; or situations we’ve been thrown into where we have no choice but to react the best way we can. Put it all together and I reckon that’s how we’ve wound up here.

Lyrics -  Wound up here

written by Anthony Classen

She asked Daddy how come
Williams drives a new car
He’s got a great big house
With a huge front yard
Then there’s old Pommie Jack
Who has worked his whole life
With so little to show
Cept calloused hands and a shack down the road

Chorus
And I said
Everything they’ve done
Every drop of sweat
Every toss of the coin
They’ll never forget
That’s how they’ve wound up here
After all those years
Of taking chances and having a go
That’s how they’ve would up here

She asked Daddy how come.
Their selling off their farm
Been in the family for years
Bankers grin
While they sheddin tears

While at the footy club
With past champions on the wall
The ol boys still love to sing
Bout the finals of 74

Chorus

She asked Daddy how come
Down at the RSL. At six every night
They turn down all the lights
And with hands on our hearts
We say lest we forget. We remember the Anzacs
We remember our past

And I said
Every weary digger
Vietnam vet
Peace keeping force
We can never forget

Cause that’s how we wound up here
After all those years
Of taking chances and having a go
Of putting it in or helping a mate
Stepping up or speaking out
Australia has wound up here

Cause that’s how we wound up here
After all those years
Of taking chances and having a go
That’s how we wound up here
